Understanding the RSA assembly mechanism is prerequisite knowledge for writing effective assets. Google’s system does not publish your ad as a fixed piece of copy. Instead, it holds up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions in a pool, then selects and combines them dynamically at auction time, using machine learning to identify which combinations are most likely to perform for a given query, user, device, and context.[1]
At any single auction, Google may display:
- Up to 3 headlines drawn from your pool of up to 15.
- Up to 2 descriptions drawn from your pool of up to 4.
- Headlines in any order, unless you have pinned an asset to a specific position.
- Descriptions in any order, unless pinned.
This means any single headline must make sense in position 1, position 2, or position 3. Any single description must make sense on its own, without relying on another description appearing alongside it. Copy that depends on sequencing — for example, a headline that begins with “And that means…” — will produce nonsensical live ads.[1]
The practical implication is that you are not writing one ad. You are building a modular asset library from which Google assembles many thousands of ad combinations. The system learns over time which combinations drive the best outcomes for your account’s primary bidding goal. Providing more distinct assets — up to the 15-headline and 4-description maximums — gives the system more material to test and optimise.[1][10]
The displayed URL is separate from headline and description assets. You can add up to two path fields (each up to 15 characters) to the display URL to give users a clearer signal about where they are landing. These path fields appear after the domain and behave like a static breadcrumb; they are not dynamically assembled.[1]

Character-count discipline
Thirty characters is tighter than most marketers expect. “Emergency Plumber Sydney” is 23 characters — safe. “Emergency Plumbing Services Sydney CBD” is 38 characters — over the limit and will be rejected by the system. Count every character, including spaces and punctuation, before saving assets.[1][6]
Writing headlines that work in positions 1, 2, and 3
Google recommends writing your first three headlines as if they may appear together.[1] In practice this means position 1 should carry the strongest relevance or keyword signal, position 2 should add the primary benefit or offer, and position 3 should add a trust signal or CTA. However, because the system can rearrange assets freely, every headline must also work in isolation. Avoid sentence fragments that only make sense after a specific preceding headline.
Avoiding near-duplicate headlines
Google explicitly states that similar or near-duplicate headlines reduce the system’s ability to test meaningful combinations.[1][10] “Fast Plumbing Sydney” and “Quick Plumber Sydney” occupy two slots but test the same angle. 5. Writing Effective Descriptions
Each description has a hard limit of 90 characters, including spaces.[6] Google may show one or two descriptions per impression, in any order, unless pinned. The practical rule is identical to headlines: every description must work as a standalone message and must not rely on another description to complete its meaning.[1]
The four-description structure
Use all four description slots. A proven structure assigns each slot a distinct job:[2][4]
- Description 1 — Primary value proposition: State the strongest benefit or outcome clearly. Example: “Cut your power bill by up to 30% with solar panels designed for Australian conditions.”
- Description 2 — Proof or trust signal: Reduce risk with verifiable evidence. Example: “Trusted by 4,200+ homeowners across QLD and NSW. CEC-accredited installers.”
- Description 3 — Offer or pricing detail: Make the commercial proposition concrete. Example: “Packages from $5,990 fully installed. Interest-free finance available — no deposit required.”
- Description 4 — CTA plus urgency or objection handler: State the next step and remove a barrier. Example: “Get a free site assessment this week — 10-year workmanship warranty included.”
What descriptions should not do
- Do not repeat headline copy verbatim. Descriptions expand the promise; they do not restate it. If your headline is “Sydney Solar Installers,” a description that begins “We are Sydney solar installers…” wastes 90 characters on redundancy.[2][4]
- Do not cram multiple ideas into one description. Ninety characters is enough for one clear message. Two half-formed messages in one description produce lower relevance scores and harder-to-read copy.[4]
- Do not write four versions of the same angle. Four benefit-only descriptions give Google no variety to learn from. Use the four-slot structure above to cover benefit, proof, offer, and action.[1][3]
CTA discipline in descriptions
At least one description should contain an explicit CTA verb: Book, Get, Start, Compare, Download, Request, or Call. The CTA description should still stand alone — “Book a free quote and get a written estimate within 24 hours” works with or without Description 1 appearing alongside it. Avoid passive or vague CTAs such as “Learn more about our services,” which add no specific instruction and underperform against action-oriented alternatives.[4][9]

6. Copywriting Frameworks and When to Use Them
A copywriting framework is a repeatable structure that organises persuasive elements in a sequence proven to move readers toward action. In Google Ads, frameworks must be compressed into assets of 30 and 90 characters rather than applied to long-form copy, but the underlying logic of each framework still governs which angle to lead with, how to sequence proof, and when to introduce a CTA. The five frameworks most applicable to RSAs in 2026 are FAB, PAS, AIDA, the 4 Ps, and micro-storytelling.
Framework 1: FAB — Feature, Advantage, Benefit

When to use PAS: Top-to-mid funnel, problem-based, and negative-intent queries. Best industries: emergency trades (plumbing, electrical, pest control), legal services, healthcare, cybersecurity, insurance, and tax. Seasonality is a strong multiplier — PAS is particularly effective when pain spikes predictably, such as burst pipes in July (Australian winter), tax-time anxiety in March–April, and pest infestations in summer (December–February).

Framework 3: AIDA — Attention, Interest, Desire, Action

The 4 Ps of copywriting organise assets around a sequence of: a bold promise, a vivid picture of the outcome, proof that the promise is real, and a push to act now.[3] In RSA terms, the promise lands in a headline, the picture in a benefit description, the proof in a trust description, and the push in a CTA description with urgency. Storytelling in Google Ads is not long-form narrative. Pinning locks a specific headline or description to a specific display position (Position 1, 2, or 3 for headlines; Position 1 or 2 for descriptions). It is a tool for ensuring a mandatory message — a legal disclaimer, a brand name, or a regulated claim — always appears, regardless of how the system assembles other assets. It is not a tool for controlling creative preference, and it carries a measurable cost.[1][10]
The CTR cost of over-pinning
RSAs with high asset coverage (few or no pins, all slots filled) achieve a median CTR of 8.4%. Pinned-heavy variants achieve a median CTR of 5.8%.[1] The 2.6 percentage-point gap reflects the system’s reduced ability to find optimal combinations when its flexibility is constrained. Over-pinning is the single most common structural mistake in RSA management.
When pinning is justified
- Legal or compliance requirements: Financial services, healthcare, or pharmaceutical advertisers that must display a specific disclosure in every impression.
- Brand protection: An advertiser that must always show the brand name in Position 1 for competitive defence on branded search.
- Testing control: Pinning a control asset in one position while testing alternatives in another position — a structured approach to A/B logic within an RSA.
How to pin without destroying flexibility
If you must pin, pin to a slot — not to a single asset. Google allows you to pin multiple headlines to the same position. Pinning three headlines to Position 1 means the system will rotate between those three in that position, while remaining positions stay flexible. This preserves more combination variety than pinning a single asset to a position.[1]
For example: pin “Licensed Financial Adviser” (Position 1), “AFSL No. 123456 – Read PDS” (Position 1), and “Compare Super Funds Today” (Position 1) to give the system three options for the first slot while ensuring the regulated content always appears there.
Worked example
Minimal Pinning for a Regulated Financial Services Account
- Setup: An Adelaide financial planning firm spending $6,000 per month on Google Search, required by ASIC guidelines to display “General advice only – consider your situation” in every ad. The account manager has pinned this disclaimer as the sole asset in Description Position 1, and pinned the brand name as the sole asset in Headline Position 1. All remaining slots are unpinned and filled (14 free headlines, 3 free descriptions).
- Numbers: With 2 sole-pinned assets (1 headline, 1 description), the combination count is: 14 free headlines choose 2 = 91 unordered pairs for positions 2 and 3; 3 free descriptions choose 1 = 3 options for Description Position 2. Total combinations = 91 × 3 = 273. If instead 3 headlines are co-pinned to Position 1 (brand name rotates across 3 variants), the free headline pool for positions 2 and 3 rises to 12 headlines choose 2 = 66 pairs, but the system now tests 3 × 66 × 3 = 594 combinations — a 2.2× increase in testable variants with the same compliance constraint met.
- Decision: Pin 3 approved brand/disclaimer headline variants to Position 1 (not 1 sole asset). Pin 2 approved disclaimer descriptions to Description Position 1 (not 1). Leave positions 2, 3, and Description Position 2 fully unpinned with the maximum remaining assets.
- Why: Pinning multiple assets to the same position preserves system flexibility and approaches the 8.4% median CTR of high-asset-coverage RSAs, rather than the 5.8% of pinned-heavy variants.[1]
8. Keyword Insertion and Dynamic Text Customisation
Google Ads offers three dynamic text tools that can personalise ad copy at scale: keyword insertion, ad customisers, and IF functions. Each carries different complexity, different risk profiles, and different character-count implications.[1]
Keyword insertion (KI)
Keyword insertion automatically replaces a placeholder in a headline or description with the search keyword that triggered the ad. The syntax is {KeyWord:Default Text}, where the default text (up to 30 characters for a headline) appears if the keyword would exceed the character limit or if insertion is not possible.
KI improves relevance signals by mirroring the user’s query back to them, which can lift CTR and Quality Score. However, it creates risk: if your keyword list contains branded competitor terms, misspellings, or awkward phrases, KI will insert those verbatim. Audit your keyword list before enabling KI and ensure every keyword in the ad group produces grammatically correct inserted copy.[1][10]
Ad customisers
Ad customisers pull dynamic values — prices, stock counts, countdown timers, location names — from a data feed or campaign setting. A countdown customiser, for example, inserts a live days-remaining figure into a headline: “Sale Ends in {=COUNTDOWN(“2026-12-26 00:00:00″,”en-AU”)} Days” — useful for Boxing Day promotions running 1–26 December 2026. Customisers require feed setup and are best used when the dynamic value is genuinely time-sensitive or location-specific and adds meaningful urgency or relevance.[1]
IF functions
IF functions serve different copy to different audiences or devices. Example: {=IF(device=mobile,"Call Us Now",""Get a Quote Online")}. This allows mobile users — who may prefer to call — to see a call-focused CTA, while desktop users see a form-focused CTA. IF functions are most valuable when mobile and desktop conversion paths are genuinely different in your account.[1]
Character-count caution
All dynamic insertions must fit within the 30-character headline or 90-character description limit after substitution. Test your default text and your most common inserted values against the character limit before publishing. A headline that reads correctly with a short keyword but overflows with a long one will be truncated or suppressed.[1][6]
Worked example
Keyword Insertion for a Multi-Service Trades Account
- Setup: A Gold Coast trades account spending $8,100 per month across 6 tightly themed ad groups (plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, tiling, concreting). Each ad group currently has a separately written RSA with a manually typed service name in Headline Position 1. The account manager wants to consolidate to a single RSA template per ad group using keyword insertion.
- Numbers: The longest keyword in any ad group is “Residential Roof Restoration” at 28 characters — within the 30-character headline limit. The shortest is “Tiler” at 5 characters. Default text set to “Gold Coast Trades” (17 characters — within 30). All 6 ad groups have keyword lists audited: 0 competitor brand terms, 0 misspellings, 2 awkward phrase-match terms removed (“cheapest tradie near me” — 22 chars but grammatically poor when inserted). After audit: 100% of remaining keywords produce grammatical inserted headlines.
- Decision: Implement headline: “{KeyWord:Gold Coast Trades} – Free Quote” (inserting keyword + ” – Free Quote”; longest result = “Residential Roof Restoration – Free Quote” = 41 chars — OVER LIMIT). Revise: “{KeyWord:Gold Coast Trades}” alone in Headline 1 (max 28 chars, safe). Add “Free Quote – Call Today” (23 chars) as Headline 2 (static).
- Why: The hard 30-character headline limit applies after keyword insertion; failing to test the longest keyword before publishing causes the headline to be suppressed or truncated, eliminating the relevance benefit of KI entirely.[1][6]
9. Ad Strength and Asset Performance Ratings
Ad Strength is Google’s in-platform creative quality signal for RSAs. It rates your ad’s asset variety, keyword relevance, and slot coverage on a scale of Poor, Average, Good, and Excellent. Google’s vendor claim states that improving Ad Strength from Poor to Excellent is associated with 15% more clicks and conversions on average — though this is a vendor claim without a published independent sample size, so treat it as directional rather than a guaranteed outcome.[4]
What drives Ad Strength up
- Asset variety: More genuinely different headlines and descriptions improve the rating. Near-duplicates suppress it.[10]
- Keyword relevance: Including your most important keywords naturally in headlines and descriptions improves the rating.[10]
- Slot coverage: Filling all 15 headline slots and all 4 description slots generally pushes the rating higher than leaving slots empty.[10]
- Minimal pinning: Over-pinning reduces the system’s flexibility and typically lowers Ad Strength.[10]
Asset performance ratings
At the individual asset level, Google assigns performance labels: Low, Good, and Best. These ratings reflect how an asset is expected to perform relative to the other assets in the same ad group — not an absolute quality score.
- Best assets are the system’s top-performing candidates. Preserve these and use them as the benchmark angle when writing replacements for other slots.[10]
- Good assets are competitive and useful. Leave them in place unless you have a meaningfully different angle to test.[10]
- Low assets are underperforming relative to peers. Replace them with a fresh angle
